Can I trust a jeweller with my diamond?
Trusting a jeweller with your precious diamond is an issue many members of the public face. There are numerous stories about jewellers swapping a customers diamonds. Most of them are urban legend – with no substance or proof. When you take your diamond engagement ring in for resizing you should also take your diamond certificate with you. Do not leave it with the jeweller – but ask them to check (in front of you) if the stone in your ring is the stone on the diamond certificate. This way there will be no upsets later.
The chances of you diamond being swapped for a lower quality diamond or or a cubic zirconia are slim. Remember the jewellers reputation is at stake and having this type of publicity will kill his reputation. It is just not worth the money.
In saying this there are unscrupulous jewellers around. Best advice is always to use a jeweller that is registered with the Jewellery council of South Africa. Most reputable jewellers are registered and in such a small trade as the jewellery manufacturers you will easily find a jeweller who is a member.
The other thing I see often is that the public hops from jeweller to jeweller looking to save themselves a few hundred rands. This is looking for trouble. If you find a jeweller you trust, and who does good work – stick with that jeweller. Just like having a lawyer or a doctor – find someone you are comfortable with and stay. If you buy you diamond engagement ring from a manufacturing jeweller – it is a good idea to take you diamond ring back to them for sizing and cleaning.. or updating your valuation. If they made your diamond ring they will be best qualified to fix it or re-size it. They will also look after you better as you have a relationship. As a manufacturing jeweller who has done many valuations – I have learnt that everyone thinks that the diamond they own is a blue white flawless diamond – in most cases this is not true. In rare cases I have had clients who bring me their diamond engagement ring only to find that the diamond is not a diamond -and they haven’t taken it off since they got it – you have to wander if the husband was ripped off – or perhaps didn’t have the money in the first place.
