Diamond Insurance is critical when buying loose diamonds – as diamonds are very small with a very high value, misplacing them can be easy – and loosing your loose diamond will really upset you. When you buy a loose diamond you should ask for a diamond certificate. Diamond certificates are available when you purchase, sometimes you need to ask – although any diamond dealer, or diamond wholesaler who is honest will offer you one immediately.

Diamonds and platinum - is it insured?

The diamond certificate will describe your diamond, carat weight, color, and clarity – it will also have a small sketch showing where and what the flaws look like. This will enable any jeweller or gemologist to identify your gem. You will also be able to use this to get a valuation on your diamond – usually for insurance purposes. Even if you buy you diamond from a diamond dealer or a wholesale diamond merchant – they should offer certificates.

A diamond certificate is not a valuation certificate – they are separate documents and you will need both to get an accurate assessment of your diamond engagement ring, or for insuring your diamond. Diamond Insurance can be pricey – shop around and get quotes. Make sure that your diamond is not over insured. This often happens when you have an outdated jewellery valuation – or you ask a retail jeweller to value the stone. Insure your diamond ring at what you can replace it for – and keep the valuation up to date. Diamond certificates will be given by the diamond dealer or the jeweller who sold you the diamond or engagement ring. Ask for valuation certificate and diamond cert when you insure diamond ring. Jewellery valuations should be done by a qualified goldsmith or jeweller. Diamond certificates will need to be done by a qualified diamond merchant or gemologist.

Many clients wish only to buy loose diamonds – this is perfectly legal in South Africa, and other parts of the world. If the diamond is cut and polished there is no issue with buying loose diamonds – the problem comes in when a customer either wants to sell an uncut diamond, or wants to buy an uncut diamond. This is against the law in South Africa.

Uncut diamond

When you buy a loose diamond, or a diamond that is not set into a diamond ring, you should insist on a certificate for the stone. The diamond certificate will describe the diamond, flaws, carat size and color – the diamond certificate will help with insurance, and will be useful when handing it over to a jeweller to have diamond ring made. When you do ask a diamond jeweller to make a diamond engagement ring with your loose diamond, make sure your loose diamond is insured – most hand made jewellers do not accept responsibility for the insurance on your diamond.

Overseas it is possible to buy uncut diamonds and sell uncut diamonds. The laws around diamonds are far less strict. When you buy loose diamonds they must have a diamond certificate and you should insure diamonds and the diamond ring when it is finished. A diamond certificate will also ensure that you have not purchased a conflict diamond. You will need to declare the diamond when you pass through customs – sometimes when you buy a loose diamond in South Africa you can ask the diamond dealer, or diamond wholesaler to have what is known as a “take away” made. This is a simple, inexpensive setting for the diamond, usually made of silver, that the diamond is mounted into. The diamond can now be worn on the finger. A handmade jeweller will make up this diamond ring.

Trusting a jeweller with your precious diamond is an issue many members of the public face. There are numerous stories about jewellers swapping a customers diamonds. Most of them are urban legend – with no substance or proof. When you take your diamond engagement ring in for resizing you should also take your diamond certificate with you. Do not leave it with the jeweller – but ask them to check (in front of you) if the stone in your ring is the stone on the diamond certificate. This way there will be no upsets later.

3 gold diamond engagement ring

The chances of you diamond being swapped for a lower quality diamond or or a cubic zirconia are slim. Remember the jewellers reputation is at stake and having this type of publicity will kill his reputation. It is just not worth the money.

In saying this there are unscrupulous jewellers around. Best advice is always to use a jeweller that is registered with the Jewellery council of South Africa. Most reputable jewellers are registered and in such a small trade as the jewellery manufacturers you will easily find a jeweller who is a member.

The other thing I see often is that the public hops from jeweller to jeweller looking to save themselves a few hundred rands. This is looking for trouble. If you find a jeweller you trust, and who does good work – stick with that jeweller. Just like having a lawyer or a doctor – find someone you are comfortable with and stay. If you buy you diamond engagement ring from a manufacturing jeweller – it is a good idea to take you diamond ring back to them for sizing and cleaning.. or updating your valuation. If they made your diamond ring they will be best qualified to fix it or re-size it. They will also look after you better as you have a relationship. As a manufacturing jeweller who has done many valuations – I have learnt that everyone thinks that the diamond they own is a blue white flawless diamond – in most cases this is not true. In rare cases I have had clients who bring me their diamond engagement ring only to find that the diamond is not a diamond -and they haven’t taken it off since they got it – you have to wander if the husband was ripped off – or perhaps didn’t have the money in the first place.

They are not as nice as I had imagined. They don't have the luster of a white diamond.

Black Diamond rings and titanium Rings make fantastic engagement rings and wedding rings. Black diamonds are also very good for men’s engagement rings.

Ever since learning about black diamond rings as a young jeweler, I have been intrigued. “Is there really such a thing as a “black diamond?” I questioned my master goldsmith. Yes, he replied, they use these for making sand paper and diamond tip specialist tools. “You mean they crush these up?”.

I felt surprised. The very thought of this black treasure featuring the qualities of a diamond with a black hue had grabbed my imagination. They are not available as a cut gem stone it was many years before I got to look at one. (When buying a diamond always find a jeweller you can trust)

At this time they’re pretty very common. They are not as nice as I had imagined. They don’t have the luster of a white diamond. The reason being what we see as black color is carbon in it’s dirty variety. Whenever a white gem is graded any kind of imperfections and blemishes add up against it as they will mess up the sparkle as well as refraction of the diamond. In the black diamond it is one large flaw – in fact the better the black diamond the blacker and more solid the actual flaw.

None the less, mounted directly into titanium engagement rings or platinum wedding bands they have a wonderful look. They will retain all the other qualities of any good diamond, specifically hardness and durability. This makes it an perfect gemstone for jewelry – especially men’s wedding rings as well as bangles. Set in pave they create a distinctive look and contrast with the precious metals.

Titanium together with diamonds have always been a unique fuse – both hard, both hard to come by – the diamond titanium combination is a forever product. Silver and gold are really fantastic for expensive jewelry however let’s face it – they are really soft and wear out with time.

Sterling silver oxidises (will change colour) and unless you are using 9 carat gold (and that’s hardly gold, just 37.5% pure gold) it will eventually bend and scuff. Even 9 carat gold scratches and gouges easily The 18 carat golds and 14ct golds are worse as they are softer – Titanium and platinum on the other hand are tough and durable. They will both equally scratch if handled badly enough – however titanium being 5 times harder compared to stainless steel, will last significantly longer.

It is especially true with men’s jewellery. Men are hard and take much less care with their rings and bangles. Through my personal experience I love to put a piece of jewellery on (in fact the same is with clothes as well as cars) and forget about it. Generally If I need to clamber a mountain or change one of the wheels , I don’t choose to remove my wedding ring first. I don’t think of it – I simply plunge in and do things i need to do,

Titanium wedding bands and platinum rings are perfect for a man’s ring. Include black diamonds to it and you have an elegant piece of jewellery that will last a life-time – regardless of how much mistreatment the wedding band or even titanium cuff links get.

There are other choices for diamond stones for gents jewelry. Any of the hard semi precious stones are appropriate in a men’s wedding ring. In the reddish colors you have garnet, Ruby, or rubalite (fancy term for red tourmaline). Green coloured jewels are tourmaline, peridot, emerald (brittle). Purple gems come in Amethyst. Tough Blue gemstones are usually sapphire as well as indicolite (blue Tourmaline) – but just forget about tanzanite engagement rings – tanzanite and titanium are a terrible mix.

Tanzanite isn’t a gemstone I would rate as jeweller. It’s got the hardness of glass, and also a ladies engagement ring will be affected. Tanzanite gems will certainly scratch, nick or even break pretty soon in a tanzanite band. If you are fortunate enough it doesn’t – with time you can expect this to lose it’s facets and round off. Tanzanite engagement rings tend to be about the worst concept anybody ever came up with.

Another great gem stone is Citrene. It comes in the yellows and oranges and is not too costly. It really is quite hard – Of course Cubic Zirconias are another gem i always rate really highly. The present day cubic is available in a huge range of colours, they are inexpensive plus they are harder compared to many of the semi precious gemstone. They have a refractive index which is greater than that of expensive diamonds (they sparkle much more) and they are generally easily available. Against them is the fact that they are inexpensive as well as readily available.

Against black diamonds and also white diamonds the many other gems fall short in terms of hardness plus wear-ability. What they lack is hardness though they gain in beauty. The colours associated with semi precious gem stones are excellent. Absolutely no two will be identical and why people call these semi precious I’ve no clue – personally they are all valuable. They are supposed to be much more widespread compared to expensive diamonds – but diamonds happen to be common – one can find huge reserves of diamonds on the globe – the right spin from the diamond mining corporations makes diamonds as well as black stones rare.
